Second Conditional Conversation Questions

The second conditional is used to talk about hypothetical (or imaginary) situations in the present & future that are unlikely or impossible. 
      • If I won the lottery, I would buy a Lamborghini.
      • If I knew the answer, I would tell you. 
      • If he ate expired cheese, he would get sick.
      • She would be heartbroken if he broke up with her.  
The second conditional is made up of 2 parts– The “IF” clause & the main clause. These can be swapped around:
  • The “IF” clause introduces the hypothetical condition.
  • The main clause tells the result or consequence of the condition.
      • If I won the lottery, I would buy a Lamborghini.
      • If I found a stray cat, I would take it home.
      • If I was an astronaut, I could go to Saturn.
      • I would sleep all night if I didn’t have school tomorrow.
      • I would buy a big house if I had a million dollars.
The second conditional is structured like this:
IF + SUBJECT + SIMPLE PAST VERB, + SUBJECT +  WOULD/COULD/SHOULD + INFINITIVE
      • If I found one hundred dollars, I would buy a video game. 
      • If I created Google.com, I would be very wealthy. 
      • If I saw Ryan Gosling, I would try to take a photo with him. 
However, the sentence structure can also be reversed:
SUBJECT +  WOULD/COULD/SHOULD + INFINITIVE
IF + SUBJECT + SIMPLE PAST VERB
      • I would work harder if I had a better job.
      • He would sleep better if he had a comfy blanket.
      • We would go to Mexico if we wanted to try delicious Tacos.

  12. If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?

  13. If you could change your job or career, what would you do instead?

  14. If you had one superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?

  15. If you were rich, how would you help other people?

  16. If you could be famous for something, what would it be?

  17. If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with extra time?

  18. If you could change something about your personality, what would it be?

  19. If you could visit any planet, which one would you choose?

  20. If you lost all your technology for a week, what would you do?

  21. If you could erase one bad memory, would you do it?

  22. If you could be any animal for a day, which one would you be?

  23. If you could instantly learn a new skill, what would it be?

  24. If you had to move to another country tomorrow, which would you choose?

  25. If you saw a UFO, what would you do?

  26. If you could change one rule in your school or job, what would it be?

  27. If you could spend a week with any person in the world, who would it be?

  28. If your best friend won a million dollars, what would you expect them to do?

  29. If you didn’t have internet for a month, how would your life change?

  30. If you could switch lives with someone for one day, who would it be?
